My parents are in town and it's been a fun week. We took advantage of the fact that I don't have class on Tuesdays and went out to Valencia instead of hanging around Alicante. We walked around the city center for a while looking at the buildings, climbed up a church tower (and then waited 15 minutes to leave as there was a school group of at least 100 kids coming up the stairs right when we decided to go down), strolled through the central market, and then headed over to the Museum Campus of Arts and Sciences. We skipped the Exploratorium-esque museum due to time/energy limitations (ok, and honestly I was probably the only one who would have been interested in going anyway...) and spent a few hours in the aquarium. It was, to use an excellent, recently-learned colloquial phrase, supermegaguay! AKA really cool. They had tunnels going through two of the exhibitions, which meant I got to walk around and have sharks swim right over my head. Good job, Valencia. Way to rock.
Having my parents in town also meant that I got to play translator at one of the most entertaining lunches I've ever had the joy of sitting in on. Because they don't speak Spanish. And my host family doesn't speak English. And it was great fun for me, speaking both. Although it got a little confusing when I was trying to listen to Pepe tell a story to my parents but then MariCarmen started talking to me. Or later when I started telling my parents something in Spanish without realizing what I was doing. Luckily that was not the time I told them something along the lines of: Uh oh, you've done it now. You're about to be shown a large collection of books, pictures, and postcards, with lots of finger jabbing and rapid flipping of pages/changing of countries, and it's going to last about 30-45 minutes. And you thought you were going to the beach after lunch - hah! But no, a good time was had by all. Or at least, a good time was had by me and if anyone else didn't have a good time they didn't say anything. Perhaps for fear of having it accidentally translated.
We're taking off for Granada this morning, thanks to the joys of 4-day weekends every weekend. Should be good!
